TSC Announces Salary Increase for All Teachers.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced that starting next month, teachers nationwide will receive pay increases.
TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi announced the allocation on Friday, June 26, during the concluding ceremony of the 49th KESSHA Annual National Conference of Principals in Mombasa, noting that the higher pay will take effect from July.
According to Muturi, the rise came after the government provided Ksh8.4 billion to raise their pay. “We have been allocated Ksh8.4 billion for increasing teachers’ salary from July this year. That money has been allocated, and we will see that it is paid,” Muturi added.
At the same time, Muturi announced that the commission will advertise the promotion of more than 30,000 teachers in the coming weeks after receiving Ksh2 billion from the National Treasury to facilitate the promotions as part of efforts to improve teachers’ welfare.
Additionally, the TSC chairperson revealed that the commission has secured funding to employ 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, a move that addresses one of the key demands raised by the teachers during recent nationwide demonstrations.
Muturi said the promotions will target teachers across several job groups, from C2 to D5, covering grades C2, C3, D1, D2, D3, D4, and D5.
He added that the promotions will be based on merit, performance, and years of service, with TSC also taking into account teachers who have stagnated in the same job group for long periods.
Meanwhile, speaking at the same event, Julius Ogamba directed the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) to immediately publish and distribute learning materials tailored for learners with special needs.
The CS said the directive specifically targets learners living with disabilities, including those who are visually impaired, ordering KICD to ensure the timely production and supply of Braille books and other accessible learning materials to support inclusive education across the country.
The developments come days after the TSC and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) signed a major agreement that will make it easier and faster for teachers to be considered for promotions under a revised Career Progression Guideline.
The Memorandum of Understanding, signed on June 18, is anchored on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the two parties in July last year and is expected to streamline long-standing promotion delays in the teaching service.
Under the new arrangement, teachers seeking promotions will no longer go through what has been described as a lengthy and complicated process before receiving recommendations and approvals for appointment.
Instead, teachers will now progress through six promotion levels, a reduction from the previous structure that required movement through more stages before reaching senior positions.
