KNEC Announces Training for Teachers Starting April. How to apply.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a one-week online item-writing training session for teachers starting in April this year.
As per KNEC, the programme targets classroom teachers as well as teacher trainers seeking practical skills to develop high-quality assessment items, a growing demand as schools continue to implement competency-based learning across primary, junior, and senior school levels nationwide.
According to the council, the training will begin on April 20, 2026, and focus on equipping participants with the skills to create reliable, learner-centred assessment tools for both basic education and teacher-training institutions.

Participants who complete the course successfully will receive certification and may later be engaged by KNEC as contracted professionals, offering teachers the chance to earn additional income while contributing to national examinations.
“Participants who successfully complete the training will be certified and may, from time to time, be engaged by KNEC as contracted professionals as need arises,” highlighted KNEC.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate strong professional integrity and be qualified subject specialists currently teaching in primary schools, junior schools, senior schools handling Grade 10, or institutions offering stage-based and teacher training programmes.

Eligible institutions include Teacher Training Colleges offering Diploma in Teacher Education for Primary and Secondary levels, as well as Special Needs Education programmes.
Additionally, candidates must have at least 3 years of teaching experience, be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and demonstrate familiarity with curriculum designs relevant to their subject areas.
Moreover, applicants must hold appropriate academic and professional qualifications and be formally recommended by their head of institution, ensuring that only credible and active educators are considered for the training.
KNEC further emphasised that the training is meant for new applicants, noting that those who previously got the training are advised not to apply to allow fresh participation opportunities and absorption of fresh people into the teaching system.

“Teachers and teacher trainers who have already been trained by KNEC in item writing are advised not to apply,” stressed KNEC.
This comes at a time when the government recruited 24,000 new teachers in January 2026, contributing to a total of 100,000 teachers hired since 2023 to address staff shortages, who will likely benefit from the training.
Applications are strictly online through the official KNEC portal, with interested teachers required to submit their details via the KNEC portal before the deadline set for April 13, 2026.
