KUCCPS Shows the Distinction From Cluster Points and Cut-Off Prior to University Entrance
While 2025 KCSE candidates await university placement applications, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has clarified the distinction between cut-off points and weighted cluster points.
Weighted cluster points are a candidate’s calculated performance based on four important subjects, KUCCPS explained on their official website.
Because each degree program is assigned to a cluster with its own subject requirements and total KCSE performance, these subjects differ based on the degree program one chooses.
For instance, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and English or Kiswahili are important subjects for courses in Medicine and Health Sciences.
For example, for Medicine and Health Sciences courses, the key subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, and English or Kiswahili.
For Law programmes, the key subjects are either English or Kiswahili, and the three best-performing subjects from the remaining categories.
These points are calculated to three decimal points to minimise cases where applicants may tie.
On the other hand, cut-off points refer to the weighted cluster points of the last student admitted into a particular programme during placement.
Cut-off points are not set by KUCCPS or universities beforehand as they are determined solely by student applications and course capacity.
This means that cut-off points may vary depending on the competitiveness of each course and the performance of applicants in a given year.
How Cut-off Points Work
For any course, all applicants are ranked from highest to lowest cluster points. For example, if a course has 20 slots, the points of the 20th student serve as the cut-off for that year.
But the same course will have different cut-off points at different universities, depending on how many people apply to each institution and their grades.
It is important to note that highly competitive courses, such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Architecture, and Computer Science, continue to attract high cut-off points.
Also, meeting the cut-off point does not automatically guarantee placement, as competition and programme capacity are also considered during the selection process.
KUCCPS has advised students to check the KUCCPS student portal to view the specific cut-off points for their preferred courses and institutions, even as they wait for the official opening of university placement applications.
